When I was down in Mt. Airy last I stayed in a hotel. The chamber maid came in and saw my mando on the bed. In her beautiful southern accent she said." Can youll play Hansome Molly" And I didnt know it # The tab wont do me any good. I have to get the tune in it? Where can I get the cd with it in?

I'm singin it right now, can you hear me?

If not, I think Tim O'Brien did it, but I don't know if it was with Hot Rize or solo.

Not to get off topic, but when were you in MA?

And if ya come back through, let me know and we'll meet for coffee a jam or something.

NewGrange recorded it - Tim O'Brien was in that group.

I know it's just two chords (I and V). It's on the Pete Welnick BG Jam DVD.

Try www.bluegrassbox.com. I seem to be able to find a few free live versions of any tune I'm trying to learn there. You'll need an FTP client and WinAmp to donwload and play but it's well worth learning how to download stuff off of bgb. Look for the download information on etree.org for links to the prefered programs.

Tim O'Brien did it on one of his solos, too. Maybe Odd Man In? He does it live alot, too.

Doc Watson does it nice, too. It's a great song and I was actually fiddling it in A on my lunch break at the house and singing it. One of my favorites. Key of A works best for my voice. Have fun w/it.

I used to play with a guy who liked to sing it in A. It works well there as you can work in a lot of open string drones and 7th fret doubles and....

no wait, maybe he did it in D

If only I had my mandolin, maybe I could remember how to play it for you.....

Might be best to find Tim's version, its a bit better than mine anyhow.

It is a good song. #Here’s a quick list of those who have recorded it. #Ralph did it in “B”, Tim in “A” (which I like)some others are in “G” but sounds too low for the song. #There are lots of version ranging from “Old Time” to “Caribbean”.

Doyle Lawson used to sing it when he was with JD Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys, but that maid probably won't be there when you go back anyway.
    Keep it acoustic.

Handsome Molly was first recorded by Grayson and Whitter of Laurel Bloomery Tennessee. They were a wonderful old time duo who played fiddle and guitar. They did quite a bit of recording and were well known in the 1920s.
They wrote Lee Highway Blues, and made the first recording (although they did not write) Tom Dooley, who was caught in beautiful Doe Valley Tenn.not far from Laurel Bloomery and returned to Wilkes County NC to stand trial.
Search out the original version of Handsome Molly which inspired some many latter efforts. I believe it will be worth your efforts.

Here's a link to a 30 second sound bite of the Grayson & Whitter version, interesting.

Martin Simpson does a very good version on 'The collection' album 1994.Martin is known for his acoustic guitar playing, but on this track he plays banjo.
I have tried to find a mandolin tab for 'Handsome Molly' but have never suceeded.

Great song. It's the first cut on the "New Grange" album by (guess who): New Grange. In fact, that whole album is one of my favorites. If you really want to see if you have your speed down, try playing along with "Rock in a Weary Land" on that CD. Yikes. And the last cut "Music Tree", is one of those extremely simple but captivating tunes that just about can bring you to tears (of joy).
