Smile Nigel Gatherer: The Truest of Gentlemen!

Last week I started a post in the Song Section searching for a source of Latin and South American mandolin tunes. Not having much luck with my search I sent a note to Nigel Gatherer asking if he could suggest websites. Granted it was a shot in the dark but I figured with his knowledge of Scottish and Irish tunes and through his travels that he might have run across something.

Well, Mr. Gatherer didn't just send me a note with suggestions but he went and created a booklet with 16 of some of his best loved Latin and S. American tunes for me! I'm sitting here at my PC, while the printer churns away and am absolutely floored by what he did.

We may live an ocean apart, but my heart is full of warmth for this truest of gentlemen.

    Thank you Mr. Gatherer!!

Thank you Nigel. I think I know what the rest of my summer will be focussing on, once I get through the Scottish Composers booklet. Is there a paypal system where we can make a donation in thanks for this?

Properly identified or not, the people here on MC are usually the congenial sort! Thanks to all the kind gentle folks here, even those who have differing opinions than I, even though they are wrong.
    Fun group this!

Nigel's excellent website http://www.nigelgatherer.com/ has an area at the bottom right of the home page where you can offer a contribution towards the development of the site. I'm sure this could be used for what you suggest.

Just wondering if there is a problem with the forum as I have had nothing but error messages when I try to access it.

I see what you mean - Recently, I've only checked the front page to see if there's anything of interest. Trying to open one of the boards produces an error message.

Nigel has been aware of this glitch in the forum part of the website since it happened, Ray and Jeff. I contacted him at the end of last year. I know he is an extremely busy man with all his teaching commitments and he has recently had some health problems which hospitalised him for a time. Good news is that he has been much better recently and has been musically active once more.

The rest of the site is still functioning and all the music he offers is readily accessible as always.

Sorry about the forum - the software needs to be updated and I have been putting it off for too long now. Perhaps this will act as the nudge I need to do it!

Here's another project I've been working on while I've been recuperating:

    Very nice collection, thanks!

One small quibble... "La Partida," I believe, is more commonly played as a B minor setting and not A minor. That's where Kevin Burke plays it (which might have been where it started spreading in otherwise Irish sessions), and it's the key John McGann used for the Tab and recording of La Partida in his OM book and CD. It's also in Bm in all the versions on thesession.org tune database. I suppose you could play it in Am, but it lays out very nicely in Bm and that may keep you more in sync if you find other musicians to play it with.

It's a great tune with some challenging fingering in either key. Good cross-picking practice in the B part! Here is an audio snippet of me playing La Partida from my old duo website (Gil Yslas on guitar):

    http://www.ptjams.com/string14/audio...la_partida.mp3

Now I have to learn a few other tunes from that PDF. Thanks again!

Wow Nigel, for someone who is recuperating you sure are productive. What a great set of tunes. Hope your recovery is going well. My wife and I have loved the amazing number of tunes you have made available on your site and hope to be able to attend one of your workshops when over visiting the UK.

    Thanks.

I've downloaded the pdf file too. But the waltz "Como Llora una estrella" was flagged as spanish, from Spain. This is a venezuelan waltz, composed by Antonio Carillo. The andean folk music in Venezuela is played mostly with mandolin.

Thanks Nigel, I have all your pdfs!
