    Default REALLY old salvaged wood.

In my hometown the city decided to tear up one of the central roads for reconstruction, and surprisingly found a bunch of incredibly old logs originally used to pave the way.

Does anyone think the wood might be salvageable for a cool instrument project, or do you think it's probably all rotten??

    Thanks!

It is not big enough for an instrument.

I agree. Too small and also pretty beat up. What kind of wood is it?

Well a few years back, Taylor guitars "I think" made a guitar out of pallet wood. Looked pretty kool to me. Don't know about the sound but anything is possible.

Depending on the wood, it might be suitable for necks and sides. If it was buried deep enough to be anaerobic it might be interesting. Only way to tell would be to saw up some logs.

I do know that John Duffey re-topped an F-2 Mandolin and converted it to an F-5 using a step from a bar in Georgetown and that step came from an old, and I do mean old, clipper ship that used to said up the Potomac river back in Colonial days, the step was over 200 years old and it was/is a killer mandolin....I don`t know exactly what kind of wood it was but I assume some kind of Spruce....

A guy in New York builds electrics with salvaged wood from sometimes historic buildings. NY Times article.
