Thread: Kentucky KM150S vs Loar LM520

Default Kentucky KM150S vs Loar LM520

So here's two mandolins that I haven't seen compared. One's an A, the other is an F and they're in quite different price ranges. But the deal is that I would like a quality beginner Mandolin. I can get the LM520 used for about $320, and or the KM150 new for even less. I don't care about looks. I just want the better sounding, better quality instrument.

    Any guidance for me?

I have owned several Kentucky mandolins, and the KM150 is an excellent mandolin, especially for that price. I think that Loar makes a really nice F style for the money. The neck shape of the Loar is comfortable for a bigger hand, so I would pick the LM520 for that reason. The resale for the Loar would be higher, but then the purchase price is a bit higher, too. You can't beat the KM150s for the price and many on this forum will attest to that. Make sure to buy it from Folkmusician, the Mandolin Store or Elderly, among other sponsors to this site, so that you will get a great set up. Set up is everything! Good luck!
