Default Worm Over F Style Tuners

We've got some past discussions about this that pretty much ID Grover and Gotoh as being the only options for worm over F style tuners. Has anyone else entered the market with decent tuners?

I'm looking for silver to match the TP and wheels. I actually like the way the Schaller plate looks but I really want removable buttons. I grabbed a set of Gotoh's but I'm not sure I'm going to use them. I asked Stewmac if they'd consider making worm over models of their Golden Age F tuners.

    the buttons are removable .,..

small hammer cracks the plastic regular types as would come on Silver Schallers, nicely..

the die cast back plates do let you shuffle shafts easily

they were backwards worm under , when they were on my Lebeda,
before I got a set with the opposite gear cut , and took them off..

Then did the worm-Button-shaft shuffle to make them CCW turning worm over..

    Any One else?

A few things on my wish list this week for worm over tuners.

    1. Grover tuners without those indentations on the sides of the plate (like they used to be). That just looks cheap to me.
    2. Schaller tuners with removable buttons.
    3. Golden Age tuners built worm over.

Right now the Schaller's (in nickel) are at the top of my list.

Yeah, Mike. None of those look even remotely right to me. They need to look like these.... nickel and brass..

Ken's right. But those are hard to come by.
The closest in a modern version would be from the German Rubner company. http://www.rubnertuners.com/new-page-1/ They seem to make mostly the worm under style, but I'm sure they would customize a set.

I'd love to hear your response from StewMac. I've asked them almost the opposite for a worm under A model tuners (could even use the f style tuners and just use all the shafts from one bin to make the A style set). They just said that we don't do custom orders.

I got a "We will discuss that" answer. It doesn't look like it would be too hard.

WD Music Products, the folks that sell new Kluson mandolin tuners have this model in Nickel and in Gold. It appears to be a Schaller knock off with screw on buttons. AllParts sells them in gold as well. These appear to be the same tuners that are on my no name Korean built Mandola.

Well, the F12 tuners are brass, and have engraved plates with pearl buttons. F4 tuners are just nickel with ivoroid buttons. But, plates and length of shafts, etc are identical. They are both the "new" Waverly tuners.
I have had a number of F5's with them on, and they work well. My F4 currently has those as well.

It is too bad Stewmac just doesn't make them. I'll keep my eye out in the usual places and see if I can grab a set.

The headstock is drilled to accept either worm over or worm under tuners. If it's drilled for worm over and you put worm under tuners on it the plate will probably stick out beyond the headstock (it will on this one). No difference in the way the tuners work, simply where they were placed when the builder built the instrument. I could plug the holes and redrill but that would be more work than I want to go through. Check out Paul Hostetter's excellent page here. The second picture kind of tells it all.

Ken, what's the length of those string posts? Modern tuners are usually around an inch. Vintage Loar tuners, however, are shorter, 23 mms, same as the hole spacing.

Other Purely Mechanical , string pulls capstan mounted Round gear into the worm gear , Vs Away from it ..

the bushing in the headstock and the holes it is set into is another shaft support ..
