    Hey everyone,

I'm trying to locate the tab to "Soldiers of the Cross", from Ricky Skaggs. I've tried all the tab sites and its not at my local music store. Any help will be appreciated.

I really dont think that tab is on the online market. Check out his website at Skaggs Family records and email them and see if he could send you the tab somehow.

    PGAfan790,

The direct path. Thats a great approach. I should have tried that sooner, and I would have if I had thought of it. Thanks.

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Thats funny. He spent a 1/3 of his time at MErleFest tuning his guitar and mando.

He even told about his daddy gettin on him when he was little about being picky and in tune.

You can contact John McGann. He offers many services which I think are great but have not had to use since I have my own teacher.

    From his website......
I can create high-quality custom arrangements of your favorite material, at any level of difficulty you desire. I can also provide a recording of a slowed-down performance, with fingerings and unique features fully explained. I can work from a recording or from sheet music to get the basic melody and chords. As this is a fully customized service, you may specify exactly what you'd like in terms of style, length, etc.

    Some possible custom arrangements:

    • Favorite vocal songs arranged as solo guitar (mandolin, bass, steel guitar) pieces

    • Music transposed to keys more suitable to your voice or instrument

    • Solo piano music arranged for solo guitar

    • Big Band pieces arranged for solo guitar

    • Complex versions of tunes made simpler (and vice-versa)

    • Favorite solos on any instrument arranged for instrument of your choice

Just happened to come across your request. Did you ever have any luck finding chords or tabs for Soldier of the Cross? I contacted Skaggs Family Records, but they weren't able to help.

    Thanks,

Really, really wanting to learn a tune is great motivation for setting to and developing the skill to decode it yourself, you know... it is not that hard if you just break it down in sections. Something like Amazing Slowdowner also helps a lot. Start by getting the basic tune, and by playing along with it. You might find it easier than you think.

Learn it by ear !. That might not be what you wanted to hear, but ''when needs must'' as they say. Learning by ear has many advantages. As you do it more & more,it becomes easier & you'll find that you develop the knack of 'hearing through' a tune,to hear the parts you want to hear.It also gives you an advantage when 'jamming' in that you'll pick up tunes far more easily.
Almeira above has it right,it is 'easier than you think' once you get started. Imagine my first ear playing 'trial' - an 18 year old who'd had a Banjo for around nine months with only a few lessons in 'Classic' banjo, trying to learn 'Foggy Mt. Breakdown' from record - i did it,& everything else since,

Maybe picky Ricky doesn't do tab, but Nile wrote the Mandolin Solos of Rick Skaggs a few years ago.......long before Soldier. I assume Niles had some input/approval from Rick, since Rick is quoted in the book. So maybe he IS into tab.

I doubt Rick ever had to check tab for his own breaks.

I've never found tab for it, but I printed off about few copies a year or so ago from one of the country sites with lyrics and chords. I remember seeing the youtube on this and was surprised to see Ricky capoed up on guitar and only played rythym. It's become one of the few songs I can get through on guitar.
