Try Mike's oud page or Oud Cafe. Different instrument but interesting and some Greek music content as well.

    Hello, Gary.

When you say "Greek songs", what style do you mean?

For example, do you mean specifically songs that were traditionally performed with mandolin(s)? Or do you mean perhaps the better-known rebetiko repertoire, that was/is traditionally performed with bouzouki, baglama, etc?

The only Greek repertoire that involves the oud is the Smyrneïko, the music of the Greeks of former Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey); that is a very narrow "slice of the pie", however...

If you give us some more information on your exact preference, we can guide you along the right path.

    Cheers,

    Victor

Victor is too modest to mention that he has composed/arranged three suites of Greek folk song adaptations for mandolin and guitar, respectively his Athenian, Ionian and Aegean mandolinatas. More on the Ionian mandolinata and a link to a video of a performance is here.

I would have to go with the style that is specific with the mandolin. I think that might be a good place for me to start..
I'm just starting to look into this genre of music

Well, Gary... I am hardly the salesman. Do check out the video referenced by Martin and, if interested in the music, please feel free to drop me a direct e-mail, either via the Café's Messenger, or at home at:
    vkioulaphides@earthlink.net

While I am not here to enrich myself (ha!), the Greek mandolin culture IS my culture and I have, ah... rather passionate feelings about it, which, in turn, cause me to get a little carried away at times. So, the least said, the better.

But, as I wrote above, the ball is in your court.

    Cheers,

    Victor

I have all three of Victors arrangements and just about any thing else he has written not all ut I'm getting there. His Ionian is a fun mandolinata and I heartily recommend it. The other two I haven't really worked with yet. The Ionian seemed easier for me to start with. John

    Victor,

I really appreciate the offer I'm a wander through the mandolin world and i love to sample different genres. But to find someone who is really enriched into one specific section is wonderful! I'll check out the video on monday at work and get back to you!
    Thanks again everyone!
