Thumbs up Chris Cornell - featuring a mandolin player on Jimmy Fallon

I enjoyed this segment of Jimmy Fallon last night that featured the singer from Sound Garden being accompanied by a mandolin player. It appeared to be a Gibson A5?

Wow, Darryl. That will be a great show. I really like to hear a mandolin played in a rock band. It is exciting to see how many various folk groups are springing up playing old-time music and including mandolins, slide guitars, etc. Please let us know how you liked the Cornell concert.

I think the mandolin is one of those Gretsch New Yorkers. Hard to tell, but I think that's what it is.

Very Springstein in my opinion. I just wanted to listen to the Mandolin and shut the singer up! LOL!

Chris Cornell will be on Ellen today.

PS: There is a performer here named Emily Springsteen. Not from New Jersey, but Michigan.

Oh my goodness, he's looking and sounding more and more like my hero, Tonio K. (whom I should probably mention in the "Brush with Greatness" thread, since being his unofficial Webmaster for 19 years has entitled me to hang out with him a few times). I don't think Tonio ever had a mandolin player in the band, though. Chris has taken the second half of Tonio's famous advice and started wearing dark glasses; now he should take the first half and change his name.

Tonio K. Haven't heard that name since I last danced to The Funky Western Civilization back in college in 78. Whoa, flashback moment.

Yeah, right? And it ain't even Throw Back Thursday yet.

I know I have a couple of his records (which is more than I have by Soundgarden), but it's been so long, I had to look him up. His wiki page is very impressive. His first band opened for Buffalo Springfield at The Fillmore and his solo debut was hailed by a reviewer in Stereo Review as "the greatest album ever recorded." The article is chock full of effusive praise. It's a very entertaining read. It might even be true.

BTW, that doesn't look or sound like a Gibson. To these tired eyes and ears, anyway. FWIW ...

I get it-- the paddle headstock threw me and my assumption that a professional on this big of a stage would be playing something fairly collectable, expensive, etc.; okay Caleb-- I get that it does look a lot like a Washburn NYer.. He's making good use of it in this musical format. Thanks guys!
