It is Chinese. I think it is called a Zhong Ruan, or just Ruan.
I used to spend about three months of the year in China, and I found a government music store that sold Chinese student instruments for around $60-80. Every time I went I would bring back three or four instruments. I have a bunch of them now. I have a Pipa, Guzheng, several Erhu, Zhonghu, Gu Qi, Sheng, and a bunch of other stuff. They are all really cool to look at, but the problem with Chinese instruments is that, in my opinion, they all sound TERRIBLE. Even the expensive ones mostly just sound awful. There are a few that are quite beautiful, like the Erhu, but for the most part they are all generally thin and nasal in tone.
I am a sucker for musical instruments, so I looked past the terrible sound to the beauty of the physical instruments themselves.
I love my Chinese collection, but rarely actually play them.
Oh that is interesting, it says ZHONGRUAN TENOR RUAN Moon Guitar if you click the link, not cheap though!
yeah, there's one in my local hobgoblin, or there was. Even they couldn't hold back on their dislike of it!
