May seem stupid, but once you get a PM where should I be typing for the reply? Just start a new line above the senders text?

You can do either. Personally I always reply below quoted because that's the way conversations flow on the Forum. I think it's more important you select above or below and stick with it. Certainly, changing between the two in a conversation would be pretty confusing to the other party.
