There could be reasons he got tired of being called that. Who knows?

So...... back to the topic of Blue Chip picks and the psychological impact resulting from the loss there off.

And clearly there's plenty of that, as well as from not having one, perhaps even just thinking about one. Pretty dangerous stuff, that. And then, once you factor in the ripple effect, and the domino effect, and perhaps even the Doppler effect, who knows how far-reaching and irreversible the damage could be? Maybe the safest approach is to recall them all and destroy them, just to be on the safe side, and err on the side of caution. Well, that is, if they can be destroyed.

As the saying goes: the world is better off without bad ideas, good ideas are better off without the world.

I have no idea which that is! Perhaps just a wee glimpse into the workings of your mind. However, it's interesting graphically, though ... Would that be an orcs-estra?

The combo.of the DR strings plus the 1.5mm primetone produces a heck of a lot of sheer 'punch'. The Primetones are around $8.0 US for a pack of 3. You could do worse that to 'buy 'em & try 'em'' as a back up for your Blue Chip. A few folk on here think that they're a better pick ''for them'' than the BC's,

I have one brown Blue Chip -TAD- 40. I think I got it used with my Eastman. I fell in love with it instantly.

The Flatiron came with a number of picks including a few of the 1.5am Prime Tones and compared to the Blue Chip, I hate them.

Granted, I just screw around at home.

One cannot measure how little I care. They are sold at a price that I accept, and I buy them, and I am happy. If I found out the maker has a way of making them for $0.07 each and is making the difference in profit, or if I found out that the maker's cost is $34.93 and his margin is almost nothing - in neither case would it change how well they work, or whether I am willing to pay what I paid for them.

Before I buy something, I determine what I want and what I am willing to pay. What the seller needs to do, or not do, to sell them to me at the price I am willing to pay is not my concern. And what I am willing to pay is not dependent on what it costs the seller, or whether the seller made money or how much. It just isn't.

And after I buy something I get on to enjoying the potatoes out of it. I don't even think about whether I might have, under certain circumstances, gotten it cheaper somewhere else, or negotiated a better deal knowing the sellers actual costs. It was available at a price I was willing to pay, a price that seemed fair to me, I paid, I got it, I'm on to the owning and enjoying part.

Now if we can just figure out how to embed one of these in a Blue Chip, we'd never lose one.

I think it's been posted a few times before: Meldin Polymide. Very expensive.

    Here's a little trivia:

"It’s interesting that one of the biggest breakthroughs in pick technology actually came from a machinist who was not even in the business. “I had been machining this composite material for 10 years that costs $4,800 for a 10”x10” square,” said Matthew Goins, Blue Chip president. “One day I noticed an employee shaping a tortoise pick in the shop and a discussion led to the idea of forming a pick from the composite.” Goins took his prototype to several music festivals and quickly found out that he had something truly special. Not only was the tone great, but the material has a self-lubricating quality that reduces friction allowing for faster and more precise playing. Goins worked for two years to refine his picks.

Found that on the BC website, from a story in Downbeat magazine:

I recently ordered two buffalo horn picks for US$7 shipped. Almost as good as torty, right? I'll lose one and see how much it hurts.

I have a horn pick. I don't like it for mandolin at all, though it is kind of nice for guitar. Not at all like TS.

I can only imagine that those BC picks are outstanding. The closest thing I have used, jokingly, is the Wegan, which are very nice. I am an old guitar player, and I am stuck on Fender mediums. Love the feel and the sound I get from them playing anything I pick up-- dobro, acoustic or mandolin. I plan to buy a Blue Chip for sure, especially after reading this thread. What a bummer to lose one!

I know what the problem is: inadequate pick guards. Yes, pick guards need to include little pockets for STORING picks, which should also be attached by monofilament lines to avoid loss. Keep your favorite pick hooked to your axe; no problem!
