Top and back do appear to be the same type of wood; neither looks like a traditional tonewood, but what the heck.

So when was the last time you saw cherub's on a head stock? I think it's actually kind of cool.

A bunch of stuff with four strings
The neck looks like American sycamore, the sides red cedar or redwood (?) -- what is the top and back made of? I could be pine as the add suggests but the top at least reminds me a little of butternut?

Well, the maker certainly has nothing to worry about concerning Gibson's newly acquired trademark....
Why a duck? But seriously, why not do something with the headstock so its design is coordinated with the body shape? It's a rather odd duck this way.

Furthering Mandolin Consciousness
Finders Keepers, my duo with the astoundingly talented and versatile Patti Rothberg. Our EP is finally done, and available! PM me, while they last!
You could put an eye out with that thing!
I feel a little funny admitting this, but I really like this. Not as a primary mandolin, but if it played well it would be pretty fun in some contexts.

I wouldn't feel odd about having one as a primary working mandolin but, I'm an odd duck anyway. At least that's what "they" say!

I wonder if Duffey got a patent for his Duck? He told me the main reason he built it with that shape was in case someone stole it like they did his F-12, anyone would be able to spot it.....I just wonder why anyone would want to copy the Duck?
Willie
I heard the "easy to track down" story too, Willie. Makes sense in an odd way. I have been thinking about a duck for a couple of years, too broke to buy one, too lazy to build one, I guess I don't want one that badly!
Also, not much woodworking talent, so that kills that project before I invest in tooling and wood, practicality wins this round.....so far.
