    Default G. Giuliano: Mandolin Concerto in G (c. 1770)

    Giuseppe Giuliano (c. 1720 - c. 1776): Mandolin Concerto in G
    I. Allegro ma non tanto

Arranged for plucked orchestra in 1976 by Mario Monti from a manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

The "Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period" says:

"Giuliano, Giuseppe (ca. 1720, Naples, to ca. 1776, Naples). Italian composer and mandolin player. Almost nothing is known about him, although he appears to have been a native of Naples and functioned there as a violinist and mandolin player between 1764 and 1776, when he disappears from history. Conversely, his music was popular throughout Europe, being exported to as far away as Sweden. His style is reminiscent of Empfindsamkeit, with a penchant for Neapolitan lyricism. His works include several symphonies, two concertos for mandolins and two mandolin sonatas."

I have recorded Monti's arrangement of the first movement of this concerto as a mandolin quartet:

    "Baroq-ulele" nylgut-strung mandolin
    1915 Luigi Embergher mandolin
    Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin
    Ozark tenor guitar

I think this may be the last 18th Century mandolin concerto from me for the time being -- time for a change in period.

    Martin
