Default Suggested strum pattern for accompanying Besame Mucho

On of the things my teacher has asked me to work on this week is the chord accompaniment to Besame Mucho. I have to admit that I am not overly familiar with Latin music. I have found that the following sounds cool with the progression. Caps indicate strum.

ONE AND two AND THREE and FOUR AND

but that this sort of syncopated rhythm seem to lose a little something when played as slowly as the tune calls for. Any suggestions?

Edit: Just to be clear, the ANDs are up-strums.

We play this song with our little acoustic trio in a version inspired by Grisman/Taylor
I play a strumming pattern similar to the one, Martin Taylor plays at 0:50
    I'll try to explain: Down on 1 , up on 1+e, Down (muted) on 2, up on 2+, up on 3+, down(staccato)on 4, up(muted) on 4+
So it's: Dotted eighth notes on 1, eighth notes on 2, eighth note pause on 3, single eighth note on 3+, eight notes on 4.
    Hope that helps
