Is it just a brand name? Or does it have a quartz movement or something?

When this post first came up I decided to email Breedlove and ask the question about the origin of the Quartz name. I received a response the next day from a Breedlove CSR named Erica. She said she did not know the answer but the next time she saw Kim Breedlove she would ask him. Nearly two weeks went by and I assumed she blew me off, but then I received another email yesterday with an answer. I copied her response below:
"I finally had a chance to talk to Kim about the name of the Quartz Series. Apparently, when we first built our mandolins, we had our master class mandolins that had gloss finish, binding, etc. We also had an unbound, simply appointed mandolin in a matte black finish called the Obsidian. The Natural blonde finish mandolin that was the counterpoint to the Obsidian was the Quartz mandolin. The Quartz name morphed into meaning the series of mandolins that had simple appointments. Thanks!" — Erika Mohr
Hope this answers the question
Steve
The above post was a copy and paste I did from an old thread. It was member Mandobassman who took the time to contact Breedlove...not I.
Steve
Thank you Steve and Mandobassman!
now if you could just explain where all the fifths are that my mandolin was supposed to be tuned in. My bourbon supply is dwindling.
Geez Jaycat, a "real" answer in less than seventy seven posts!
Don't understand your "joke" Mandoplumb, what's erroneous?
Kstueve, I have the same problem, but a touch more serious, it's now progressed to Gin, Rum, Scotch......
I suppose one could wonder where the "F" is in an F-5 too, no.

Is "guitar pix" pictures of guitars or guitar picks? I ask because you have used pix in another thread referring to photos but I could also see it used as short hand for picks.
Bill Snyder
yup. you are correct. I violated my own standards.
PICKS - and a billion comments in a herd of threads. I just can't keep up.
I tuned into one thread and it said the same stuff I read in the other threads - hey wow this pick is so cool in my opinion not that I am all that talented but it made me play better and sounded great I recommend ....... you see what I mean? I can't think of what else to say. They are picks? All of them. How can the topic require so many posts? They are still just picks. And a thousand preferences. O well, I supported it also. It's still growing.

Oh man. After just 124 posts and a short time here you've yet to see the enthusiasm for this topic scratched, let alone itched.
Then of course there is the perpetual "which is best for a beginner" and a myriad number of other evergreen questions.
I think that's why Scott Tichenor added the "popcorn gallery" emoticon.

The pick makes the biggest impact/dollar ratio on the sound of your instrument. It's too expensive for most to discuss various mandolin brands and models from your own experience, but everybody can try and compare hundreds of picks. It's just bound to be The #1 conversation piece.
But if you're bored with this, you can just buy a batch of Clayton Spike 0.72 and be as happy as I am.

I have seen threads hijacked before, but this is ridiculous.

Quartz, silicon dioxide. Ubiquitous in nature. It's a mineral.
But isn't that silica bad for your finish?
They really should have imbedded Oregon-coast sand in them. . .

Hey Fatt Dad!
Taking us back to our regularly scheduled program. Thanks.
Naming a product is incredibly difficult. There's emotional content to a name. There's legal concerns. There's the physical appearance. There's the function of the product. There are hopes and dreams on the part of the buyer. There are brand loyalties. And a raft of other issues that play into a name.
Using quartz in a mandolin seems a little odd, but going back to the original logic presented by the company, I guess the naming convention here makes sense.
Nobody - and I mean NOBODY on this site ever questions the Schmergel Devastator, and I've yet to see it destroy anything....
I now return you to wherever this goes next.
