The liner notes to Andy Statman's cd "Andys' Ramble" says he plays a Gibson A-2Z. What's the difference between the A-1, A-2Z and Junior model Snakeheads?

The looks mostly. An A has no peghead inlay or back binding, is usually black or brown.. an A1 gets the peghead inlay.. an A2 adds back binding, and an a2z adds black/white binding, a blonde top, and sometimes a nice maple back

My A-1 snake had no headstock inlay, just a stenciled The Gibson on the slant.

Yeah, there are exceptions up the wazoo, especially in the Loar period. You'll see snakes marked "A" With all the trimmings of an a2, some with the top rosette like an A3 (which normally shows up on an A2z) etc etc. The normal rules of what model is what are bent a lot on snakeheads.

Mostly cosmetic then, thanks for the imput. So a Junior is essentially the same as an A-1 minus the binding and inlays, etc.?

Are the necks any different in terms of shape or feel?
