what's your budget? For your first mandolin though, I think the arch-top, f-hole mandolin the most versatile. I think solid wood is better than laminate and I think carved top is better than pressed top.
Kentucky, Eastman, J. Bovier, The Loar, Lafferty, Northfield all make such mandolins. Check out their web page to see if there is something that looks good.
Some folks (me) like flat-top mandolins. Mid-Missouri, Big Muddy and (the former) Flatiron all make those too. I'm still glad I have the arch-top though.
Used mandolins are great. Just sort of know what you are looking for (look at the new models for example).
In the entry-level (i.e., sub $300) folks seem to really like the Kentucky KM-150, which may not be carved top.
