Thread: My new Weber Gallatin Sopranolin

Default My new Weber Gallatin Sopranolin

Here is are a few pics of my new Weber Sopranolin. Got it from the "Mando Shop" in Tallahassee, FL where I live. Kyle Dunn is a Luther and a certified weber dealer. I emailed him on a Sunday and had my Sopranolin sent to him from Oregon in a week. He called Bruce Weber personally to get my new toy. He's been a Luther since the 70's and knows his stuff. Seems like He does most of his work from the net and can ship anywhere. Check out his web site at "themandoshop.com". Look under "About us" section.

I put my coffee mug in the pic to give a size scale. Also notice the pick for a size comparison.

I have a Gallatin Mando that I also got from Klye. Practicing I've found that practicing with the Sopranolin helps me play the Mando better cause I have to be much more precise with my fingering on the Sopranolin. For such a small instrument it has good projection and sustain, Surprisingly so.

    Hi Duigiud,

Thanks for posting this. It's beautiful. I am suffering a bad case of SMAS! I hope you really enjoy it.

If possible, I'd like to see it next to another, regular-sized instrument to get a sense of its size.

Tuned as CGDA, same as a Mandola. Scale length is 11 inches. No sound sample yet that I would want to publish, (LOL), but you can google Weber Sopranolin and get a few samples on Ytube.

that's a neat looking "little" instrument, just wondering is the sopranolin a weber exclusive? Can't seem to find one by any other builders. wish I could afford a weber but I can't.

Mike Black makes a beauty (actually, two to choose from). Look here http://blackmandolins.com/piccolo-mandolins.html

LOL, that looks like a blast to play. Can't think of what I'd actually do with one, but it does look fun.

What gauge strings does it use? I'm assuming there's not a standard set of strings on the market for this instrument, but do you substitute from another instrument's strings or what?

I should have mentioned above that that is Rick Faris playing Mikes mini-man.
Don't want anyone thinking that I'm that young or good looking.
Or, could play that little thing that well. especially the first time I picked it up.

It's a Weber special order, but it's on their site with pics. Not hard at all to get. Some Weber dealers discount it, mine did, The Mando Shop. $500 off. Find a Weber dealer in your area or contact Kyle Dunn at themandoshop.com. He ships all over the U.S.

Since they are tuned an octave above a mandola, (three octaves above a mandocello), there is an affinity there. I play with a 'cello and 'dola and the three of us have some fun, with the missing mandolin voice the sopranino really rings out.

They're spec-ed for standard light gauge mandolin strings; when I bought mine from John Bernunzio, he said it had "D'Addarios" on it -- didn't specify the gauge.

The custom case that comes with it is great; I also got a bridge adjustment tool and an Allen wrench for the truss rod it doesn't have.

Weber says they make a soprano model in all their mandolin series, but so far I've only seen Gallatins.

I string mine with D'Addario J73. 0.038 0.024 0.014 0.010 The strings it came with were a little stiff so I changed them before I brought it home.

I like the smaller size. Does it have to be tuned differently than DGAE?
