Default Adhesives question - no mandolin content

I know many on here know a lot about adhesives, so please indulge my non-mandolin question. This knife has sentimental meaning, and while not valuable I would really like to glue the handle back together. I'm sure the ivory looking piece is some kind of plastic, and I don't know what type of metal it is, but it is sort of gold in color.

What adhesive, and any tips on technique would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

I have built a knife or two and put scales on several others. The glue of choice is epoxy, but ONLY AFTER YOU REMOVE THE OLD GLUE.

I agree that epoxy is the way to go. Some plastics are hard to glue so it helps to give the glue something to physically grab onto.
After removing the old glue, rough up the plastic and the metal with some medium to coarse sandpaper. Don't sand a lot-- just get the surfaces a bit rough. Then mix and glue, clamping the scale in place.

Thanks, guys. Last issue - there is not a lot of glue residue on the two surfaces (I think that's why it failed). I'm thinking I will scrape off what I can, and sand of the rest. The goal is to have the two surfaces flat and rough, right? Or do I use some kind of solvent?

Mandroid, your link says "Not recommended for use on polyethylene or polypropylene plastics" . Since he does not know what the scale is made of this might be problematic.
