Thread: Which would you choose

I'm a beginner and I'm thinking about getting a new mando. I've done some research and in my price range I'm thinking about a Loar 400 or an Eastman 305. Which would you choose and why? Please take into consideration, tone, playability, volume, and resale. Thanks in advance.

I have owned both the Eastman 315 and LM400, and personally I preferred the LM400 over the Eastman. I liked the chunkier neck and the larger frets. The LM400 had an open, punchy sound that was louder and fuller to my ear.

I made a demo of the LM400 when I sold it back in '10 (probably should've kept it). Hopefully it can give you a sense of what one sounds like.

I would agree with Clement that the Loar is a better choice than the Eastman, but you should seriously consider the JBovier A5T? I think it is a better mandolin than either of the other two. It has consistently received tons of praise here on the Cafe and the recent J Bovier's have been very consistent in quality. I would seriously think about it. NFI.

The best solution would be to try both if you can and see what suits you.
