Playing rhythm during guitar break

I've posted about this before - I also play in a trio (bass, guitar, mandolin) and we struggle during guitar breaks as well. For us, the problem isn't losing the rhythm or losing the thread of the tune, but losing POWER.

The guitar player plays a huge-sounding Guild dread (seriously, the loudest guitar I've ever played), and he has an incredibly heavy right hand. When he stops playing rhythm you can hear the silence, despite the bass player and myself making our best effort to take up more space.

We haven't really found a solution, so we just accept it, but I'd love to hear the group's thoughts.

Uh-oh! It's been nearly a day. Cancel the posse, where should we send the hearse?

Rhode Island's a big state - more counties than Delaware, you know, and #2 in population density - so if you could narrow it down a bit, that would help.
