Tommy Peoples Concert Bloomington, IN 4.21.05

We are hosting Irish fiddle master Tommy Peoples for a concert here in Bloomington on April 21st, in the Players Pub at 424 S. Walnut St. Tommy has agreed to hold fiddle workshops if there is sufficient interest.

Tickets will be $15, and the Pub serves great food, beers and wines. If you would like to reserve seats, please let us know. If you’re coming from out of town and would like help in finding some accomodations here, let us know that, also! We hope for some great sessions while Tommy is here, too!

Min is preparing print advertising on poster, an e-poster, and the concert program, and WFHB Community Radio is our partner, so there will be opportunities for sponsors to be well-represented on local radio. Space is limited, so if you would like be represented please let us know by an email or PM.

Tommy has hoped to return to Bloomington for a while now, and after talking with him for some time we have finally managed to get a date and venue that promises a warm welcome and a fine time for all.

Cool, the Players Pub is a nice play to play. Ample space and a good sound system. Unless things have changed recently, you have to be 21 to get in though. You might call ahead if you are a young'n or bringin a young'n.

Speaking of fiddle players in Bloomington, Indiana... you happen to know of any potential old time/bluegrass fiddlers that are looking to play in a band. We are in the market for a fiddle player that either plays or wants to learn to play in an old time/bluegrass band.

We play about on average 3 gigs a month.

Thanks, John! We spent some time with him at the St. Louis Tionol (a WONDERFUL weekend, that!) and he is a lovely guy. He played a grand set with Pat Broaders accompanying for the Saturday night concert there, and as one might expect, his class was very well attended.

We still have some spots open for the workshop he'll give here, too.

Regarding Tommy, this (edited message) was sent by a friend in South Bend, IN:

Sunday April 24 3PM - 5PM Irish fiddle workshop, St. Patrick's school, behind St. Patrick's Church on Taylor St. in South Bend. It's at Western Ave. and Taylor Street. There are two churches on Western, St. Hedwig's and St. Patrick's. The school is in between them. We'll probably be in the basement dining room. Cost = $30, but you get two hours with the master, up close and personal.

That evening, a concert at Fiddler's Hearth at 7PM $10 cover. Two "sets." #Info number is 574-276-7822.

Our two days of Tommy were splendid! The workshop was well-attended, the party after was grand, with a really good session, and good refreshments. Tommy and Julie visited Tom Sparks' violin lutherie workshop at Indiana University and toured about town with my wife, Min Gates.

The concert was a tremendous success, with great support from WFHB Community Radio, and folks filled the Players' Pub to the rafters. Tommy asked Tom Sparks to join in on guitar, and Min Gates on bodhrán for parts of each of his two long sets, and Doug Enoch, manager of Players' Pub, handled the house sound with a light touch so that no one missed a note. With good strong sales of "The Quiet Glen" there in the Pub, Tommy and Julie left with a good pocketful, and the local session players serenaded him on his way, and we played til closing time.

Tommy Peoples is a gentleman as well as a fantastic player, and again, I wish as wonderful a time to the folks in Champaign and South Bend!
