Re: Rochester NY - Mandolin Orchestra organizing
I went to one session, but I'm a lousy sight-reader of standard notation, so it wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe 20 people there, quite a heterogenous collection of instruments besides mandolins. Mark W brought some turn-of-the-20th-century pieces, sort of the "light classical" genre that many of these orchestras apparently played.
He had only 1st and 2nd mandolin parts, so I improvised a bit on my K-1 mandocello. I wondered if the project had any staying power. As far as I know, Bernunzio may have hosted a few more sessions -- I didn't attend -- but the orchestra hasn't established anything of a presence in the scene here, if it's still going. Doesn't show up on Bernunzio's events calendar.
I'd e-mail Bernunzio's (info@bernunzio.com) and see if there's any current activity. I reviewed his e-newsletters back through last November, and saw no mention of the mandolin orchestra.
