Because who can resist another pick thread? I just got these at my local music store. With a little reshaping and bevelling I like the sound. Right - original shape. Left - a few seconds on my fine grinding wheel then follow up with 300 sandpaper.

If I miss one day’s practice, I notice it. If I miss two days’ practice, the critics notice it. If I miss three days’ practice, the public notices it.

How thick are they?
The three pack I got varies, one is 1.6 mm, 1 at 1.8 mm and 1 at 2.0 mm.
Don't go to your local meat market to get some bone to shape unless you want a really quick divorce... the stench is unbelievable, even when the bone has been cooked thoroughly. People will think your landlord is buried in your basement.
Get your bone from a pet supply store where the bone has been processed and you will have no problem with stench
Don't ask me how I know this! And don't ask me where my landlord is!!
If I harvest it from myself, how long would it take for say, a leg to grow back?
I have some horn picks--I like them.
The glide off the strings.
I am actually going through my pics to see what I like best on my Mandolin--and so far I like them the best.
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?
I bought a pick one time made out of a piece of rawhide. Not too bad, after drilling a few holes and a doing little sanding around the edges. I used it pickin around the house because it's not very loud. Haven't used it in a while.. may have to put back in service.
I have made bone, horn, fossilized ivory, tagua nut and they all sound decent, but wear too fast. I have settled on the blue chip, i know expensive, but after years of lots of playing i have some, but very little wear and i would have worn out the rest a long time ago.
THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE JUST FOR YOUR SMILE!
My horn picks show very little sign of wear--no more than most picks--even less actually.

horn=thumbs up.....nice warm tone that still projects
bone=thumbs down...way too bright and strident for me
just groove, baby!
I still need your string labels!
I have tried horn and bone, along with black onyx, metal, rosewood, ebony and lots of other materials. I think of all of them as novelties, not serious picks. My two favorite picks are the one Blue Chip I have and a pick Bill Bussman made for me out of an 1800's woman's hair comb, which is of "the material that cannot be named." I am 95% as satisfied with Pro-Plecs, though.
I get these and reshape them, love them!
