    Oops..I meant to say ring and pinky fingers or 4th and 5th digits (not index).

    Anyway, answer is because of the way the extensor tendons are bundled together in he hand before splitting off to the separate fingers.

    Thanks everyone for the very useful perspectives.

    After trying it for a while I realized that even though I had heard that v-neck was particularly for people who use the crotch method it is not a problem to play a v-neck with the thumb joint on the upper part of the neck.
