I'll admit my own complicity in the double-ness (now tripple-ness mess), but that was to put the topic into General Mandolin, in front of more eyes.
Since we're here, though, I'll say that yes, double strings would be nice - perhaps as a choice between two options - and rather than a mandola neck between, a mandola neck instead. That would make for much easier fingering, at least as far as I'm concerned. But since this is designed more or less with Warren Ellis' blessings, I understand why it's a tenor neck. As anyone who has played electric single-strings surely knows, this allows for string-bending capabilities double-strings cannot. However, if it were a 16-string mandolin-mandola, they would have sold at least one such to me - especially if there were two pickups on each neck. I doubt I would have sweated the decision for an hour. As it is, I'm still mulling it over ...
