    Default Kashmir

So I've been toying with the idea for a few weeks now of trying to replicate on my mandolin what for me is the ultimate guitar riff.

Jimmy Page tuned his guitar DADGAD when he played Kashmir, and it occurred to me some time back that that is not very different from sawmill. Then it occurred to me that playing notes on the top strings would remove any need for sawmill, and so I had a go in classical tuning.

I tried playing 0,0,12,10 - but I believe JP switches chords by taking a G down to an Fsharp, so I need an Fsharp there. Then I tried 12,0,12,10 and took the 12 on the G strings down to 11 for the next chord.

It sounds nothing like Kashmir. Oh well - we live and learn.

There are two versions, the first one with a pedal D under it and the others that follow. Here's the first:

Substituting a low A for the pedal D---
    2-0-2-3
    2-0-0-2
    2-3-0-1
    2-2-3-0
    2-4-5-x -- 2-2-4-x
    2-2-3-x
    2-0-2-x
    3-0-1-x
    2-0-0-x
(Followed by the bass line finishing on D)

The one with downward-moving bass line---

    2-2-2-3
    2-0-0-2
    5-3-0-1
    5-2-3-0
    2-4-5-x -- 2-2-4-x
    0-2-3-x
    0-0-2-x
    3-0-1-x
    2-0-0-x
(Followed by the bass line running down and back up to A)

Really works better with a C string, although you have to contort a bit to achieve this in one track as I did:

Not a guitar. I'm using a 5-string electric mando. Sounds even better on 10-string, but I didn't have a 10 at the time I did that track.

    Here's the tab for 5-string (or 10-string):

    2-x-0-2-3
    2-x-0-0-2
    2-x-3-0-1
    2-x-2-3-0
    2-x-4-5-x - 2-x-2-4-x
    2-x-2-3-x
    2-x-0-2-x
    2-3-0-1-x
    2-2-0-0-x
    (bass riff)

    And:

    2-x-2-2-3
    2-x-0-0-2
    0-5-3-0-1
    0-5-2-3-0
    x-2-4-5-x - x-2-2-4-x
    x-0-2-3-x
    x-0-0-2-x
    5-3-0-1-x
    5-2-3-0-x
    (bass riff)

I've been thinking about 5-string and 10-string mandolins. Off topic, but how easy is it to obtain the low C strings needed for such an instrument?

As an Orchestra, we did Kashmir a few years back. It was very fun and sounded great (IMHO). Maybe you will find our video helpful and useful.
