There's a book by that title that includes the song, based on the Grisman/Garcia version (same lyrics, I believe). The song is actually very old, and is probably based on an even older song called "Mattie Groves." I've seen a number of different versions of it. One of my favorites.

Here you go. (With chord changes as a plus.)

    Dm C
    Peaches in the summertime
    Dm
    Apples in the fall
    F C
If I can't get the girl I love
    Dm
I don't want none at all

    Dm C
    Shady Grove, my little love
    Dm
    Shady Grove, I know
    F C
    Shady Grove, my little love
    Dm
    I'm bound for Shady Grove

Wish I had a banjo string
    Made of golden twine
Every tune I'd play on it
I wish that girl was mine

Wish I had a needle and thread
    Fine as I could sew
I'd sew that pretty girl to my side
And down the road I'd go

Some come here to fiddle and dance
    Some come here to tarry
Some here to fiddle and dance
    I come here to marry

Every night when I go home
My wife, I try to please her
The more I try, the worse she gets
Damned if I don't leave her

Shameless plug. I love Doc's numerous versions, and recorded one of my own by way of trying out my new banjo.

Interestingly enough, even though I credit Doc as my inspiration I didn't use any of those lyrics above ... but I might start.

Please forgive my newbie clawhammer skills. The banjo itself sounds great ... my playing? Well ...

Or maybe you want this version:

    (chorus)

    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove I say
    Shady Grove, my little love
    I'm bound to go away

Cheeks as red a a blooming rose
And eyes are the prettiest brown
She's the darling of my heart
    Sweetest girl in towm

    (chorus)
    (break)

I wish I had a big fine horse
And corn to feed him on
And Shady Grove to stay at home
And feed him while I'm gone

    (chorus)
    (break)

Went to see my Shady Grove
She was standing in the door
Her shoes and stockin's in her hand
And her little bare feet on the floor

    (chorus)
    (break)

When I was a little boy
    I wanted a Barlow knife
And now I want little Shady Grove
To say she'll be my wife

    (chorus)
    (break)

A kiss form pretty little Shady Grove
    Is sweet as brandy wine
And ther ain't no girl in this old world
    Thats's prettier than mine

    (chorus)

    OK, last one.

    Shady grove my little love
    Shady grove I say
    Shady grove my little love
    Bound for shady grove

Wish I was in shady grove
    Sittin in a rockin chair
And if those blues would bother me
    I'd rock away from there

Had a banjo made of gold
    Every string would shine
The only song that it would play
    Wish that girl was mine

When I was in shady grove
    Heard them pretty birds sing
The next time I go to shady grove
    Take along a diamond ring

When you go to catch a fish
Fish with a hook and line
When you go to court a girl
    Never look behind

When I was a little boy
All I wanted was a knife
Now I am a great big boy
    I'm lookin for a wife

Beniguus: I clicked on your link and listened. Then I right clicked, saved target as ,then listened again. This time I played it in Win. Media player. Man, big difference. Really sounded great! Great guitar AND Mandolin ( especially at the end ) and your ban$o was so suttle. Verry good. Who was singing? Also very good.Sorry
I didn't hear it the way it was meant to be heard the first time. I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to computers. I'm learn'in.... But, thank's to you and this venue,I'll hopefully continue to learn and appreaciate many more beautiful moments like this.

Hey thanks. I didn't realize there would be a sound-quality difference in playing it straight off the site vs. saving the mp3 locally ... but what do I know?

I posted that link yesterday, and then listened to it myself and cringed! I would re-do that song quite differently today - even though that recording is only about two-weeks old. Oh well. Everyone's there's own worst critic I guess.

BTW: That's me singing, too. I also notice braccio posted the pretty much the same lyrics I used.

Good on you! Nice singing! My problem is: The key that braccio showed me was cool to play, it isn't the key that Doc & Dave play it in. Still need help. Calling braccio..
You could also jump in too,Benig......///

    Hi Buddy,

Always glad to help. Here are some more Shady Grove transcriptions. This one is from Roland White's site.

If this is not what you're looking for, mandozine.com has a TEF file in of it in B. I also have another version in G that I could send you.

Is there another "Shady Grove" song? I recall hearing it with a chorus ending in "... going back to Harlan". I googled that and found numerous intances. Same song different lyrics or different song?

    Example--
    Shady Grove, my little miss
    Shady Grove, my darlin'
    Shady Grove, pretty little miss
    I'm going back to Harlan

    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove, I say
    Shady Grove, my little love
    I'm bound to go away

Cheeks as red as the bloomin' rose,
    Eyes of the prettiest brown
That's my girl, little Shady Grove,
    The prettiest girl in town

I wish I had a big bay horse
And the corn to feed him on,
Wish I had little Shady Grove
To feed him when I'm gone

I wish I was an apple
    Just hanging on a tree,
Every time that girl walked by
She'd take a bite of me

Every time I go that road,
    It's always dark and cloudy
Every time I see that girl,
    She always tells me, "Howdy"

When I was a little boy
    I wanted a Barlow knife,
Now I want little Shady Grove
To say she'll be my wife

    Shady Grove, my little love
    Shady Grove, I say
    Shady Grove, my little love
    I'm bound to go away
