    Default Michigandolin!

    Don't miss this one!

My home state, Arizona, and my state of residence, Washington, could work as mandolins. Hawaii would be tricky, unless maybe you treated the islands as Ovation-type soundholes.

Hah! I like that it comes with the UP, too. I did not know that there was a big oval hole in the middle of Michigan. Someone should tell the folks who run the Wheatlands festival... that soundhole might be right in Remus.

I've seen electric guitars shaped like many things, including USA, but not an acoustic, not a state. I wonder if the price includes state tax?

Cool, Martin. Since we've moved up here I've grown to enjoy how locals will use the back of their hand as an ersatz map of the state to point out where their from.

What does that back look like? Mahogany or Michigan walnut (I hope.)

As a Texan, though, I am pretty worn out by the ubiquitous Lone Star state imagery. Nice to see the Great Lakers step up. (Though I do admit that a Texas-shaped tortilla chip does taste better than one shaped like any other state.)

Martin, I originally thought you were referring to a Michibanjolin (which I have one of). Ought to teach me to wear my glasses.

I think the oval hole, Jim, represents the area where they clear cut all the old grown white pine that floated on down to Saginaw which fueled the fortunes of the lumber barons--and probably the genesis of Waldo mandolins there.

    Well.......
One could almost make the argument that "duck" mandolins might be a bit like Tennesee or maybe West Virginia? Stretching the point I guess.I have no clue as to why the "Duck" is on my mind but, it seems to be. I am going to try to think about something else. Maybe chili? Getting cold here the last few days.

Your post reminded me I have seen some electric guitars made in the shape of Texas. I suppose a case could be made that guitars with a rectangular body are actually in the shape of Colorado or Wyoming.

Thanks for posting this mrmando. I ended up buying the Michigan mando and putting it up as a wall hanging in my man cave / music room. It also appears as the avatar for our Michigan social group. I love how the designer incorporated the Upper Peninsula in the hanger. I guess the neck would be the Mackinac Bridge (on steroids).

It's actually a very impressive piece - I believe it has a Western Red Cedar top, spalted maple sides, and Eastern Walnut back and neck. I can't imagine the labor intensive work of cutting out the shape of Michigan and bending the sides to match! And it is quite playable, although the tone is a bit thin.

Nothing that a pickup and amp couldn't fix.

Glad to see it found a home in Michigan. Seems only right.

I am pretty sure those sides were not bent. I suspect they are thick and were bandsawed out.

I think you're right, since I can see the kerf remnants, but the inside contours match. It still seems like a lot of fastidious work.
