That was awe inspiring!
Could you discuss the mandolin, set-up, etc...
WoW! That was beautiful Aaron . Reminds me very much of the Joe Pass style of guitar playing.
Re: mandolin setup, it's just an acoustic mandolin with 4 strings tuned like a mandola--it's the way Johnny Gimble strings his mandolin. Thanks for the nice comments.
You are soooooo good at this stuff!! Great work!
terrific ! I looked at your schedule but don't see any dates anywhere near me.
Boss.
Will you be getting over to London again? I missed the gig at The Crazy Coqs in 13

Great stuff!
Aaron, Could you share the string gauges you are using for the "Gimble" tuning?
Thanks
I always try getting the string gauges that were suggested to me by the great Don Stiernberg. A-14, D-24, G-38, C-50. Those seem to work well for me.
A pleasure to listen to.
Aaron might be interested in trying the Ernie Ball stainless steel-wound for the low strings--I find they hold tone well at heavy gauge for a short scale. I use a .056 for C on my 5-string electric, and .040 for G. I love the short scale for the reaches and voicings. Aaron shows the short C is pretty darn useful, no fan frets or long scale needed.

Ah- now that is really cool. I love the 4-string sound in this setting. Thanks so much for posting Aaron!

Aaron- nice video and am going to have to try the Johnny Gimble set-up. I think I have an extra mandolin lying around somewhere...
Great arrangement old buddy! I dig what you've added to chord melody style--moving low notes, dividing the four strings into sections instead of jumping from one three or four note grip to another. Bravo!
It may be worth noting that the string guages I suggested are what I use on the bottom four of my electric five-string. The C is pretty heavy, the others on the lighter side of average I guess. On acoustic mandolin my A is 16, D 26, G 41..
But yes indeed you're getting a great sound there with the "acoustic Johnny" set-up! Thanks again for advancing chord melody style mandolin and playing the good notes and tunes. It's fun ain't it?
Dang, Aaron, that is beautiful stuff. Apparently you've gotten the Acme pinky extender, my pinky just can't do that stretch. Thanks for the inspiration! ~Will
