Thread: Fret sizeing

    Default Fret sizeing

Hey all, I'm building a cigar box mandolin and I'm wondering, does the fret size matter, if I keep the distance from nut to 12th the same as 12th to bridge, can I make larger distances by extending the length of the neck, so make a neck 300mm long but make the frets wider, will that affect the sound or cause problems for me

Yes. What you are describing is a longer scale. If you use the same gauge strings, the tension will be higher. If you feel it is necessary, you can compensate for the extra tension by using a little heavier bracing....or you can use lighter gauge strings. Also, more tension may cause more problems with a bowed neck....particularly if you don't reinforce it.

Ok, thanks john, I probably won't do it then, it seems a bit risky trying out new techniques for me on a first build
