That's what I would call it.
Searching in youtube for Ovation mandocello and found this video.
Short, but kinda cool, IMHO.
I don't know the player.

Reminds me of Eric Von Schmidt's Joshua Gone Barbados....
Great ear, Marty, to pick up those changes and the licks over the drone. "Joshua Gone Barbados." There's a Labor Day song for you, with wonderful versions by Eric (above), by Tom Rush, by Dylan, and by Johnny Cash, and others.... Maybe we'll sing this one tomorrow.

I wasn't able to view the video, something about safety mode. Hawaiian slack key is my favorite music. It's what I play when I'm alone, just for myself. Here is my own humble offering on the OM:
As soon as I get access to a decent video camera I'll upload some more on my new 10-string 'cello aka liuto moderno.
So here is my latest instrument, a 10 string mandocello (more accurately a liuto moderno with a Sonny Chillingworth tune, in C of course (I think Sonny recorded it in an open G tuning, though).
For some reason it sounds banjo-ey to me in this; could be the recording quality of my phone.
Very cool. Fingerpicking a liuto, that's hard core.
Mandobart - waaaaaay cool
beautiful instrument
nice pickiin too
Sounds great! I'm not sure that I ever even considered trying to finger pick a mandocello -- at least without picks that is.
