Violin Making Workshops - Spring 2005
North Bennet Street School, Boston MA
The Sacred Geometry of the Violin
This course has been developed by Thomas Hummel to help the violin maker create their own
model, based upon the geometry of the Italian masterpieces. By taking the mystery away,
Thomas will guide the students to create their own model that will include the outline of the
body, arching and the f-layout. The course will start with an introduction to the art of
proportional design. This will be done by studying the proportions of one Stradivari and one
Guarneri violin. Upon completion, students will have their own model including template and
arching templates. Topics covered in the five days include: introduction to proportional
thinking, tools and methods, outline drawing, examination of the Stradivari and Guarneri
models and creating the templates and f-layout. Experiencein violin making is required to
participate in this workshop. This class is limited to 12 students.
