Grappelli-Grisman Tonight Show Video

I just uploaded a video of the 1979 appearance of Grappelli and Grisman on the Tonight Show and thought the folks on this forum might enjoy it.



I'm not that much of a mandolin player (my screen name is standard bluegrass banjo tuning), but this is pretty special. Hope you like it.

After listening to those two cuts a million times on the 20 year retrospective album for the past 15+ years, it is pretty amazing to get to see this video. Thank you for posting this...so amazing. I wish there were more from the Grappelli-Grisman tours.

I was never lucky enough to see them together, but I did manage to see the early Grisman band around this time at a free outdoor show at bayside Peacock Park in Coconut Grove, Miami FL (a big hippy hangout back in the day), and a year or two later seeing Grapelli at one of his frequent shows in a small jazz club in New York City. Outstanding performances both times. Treasured memories, and thanks for the reminder.

Man, they were hot on that Tonight show gig. Nothing to prove for Grapelli at that point in his career but his usual hot playing anyway, and the rest of the group was going for it!

And egad, how young that band looks. I guess I looked like that back then too. Hard to believe....

I listen to that album at least twice a week. It stays on my iphone. It's cool to see this after only hearing it all these years.

Great video. That looks like Mike Marshall on second mandolin, and Mark O'Connor on guitar.

I saw Stephane Grappelli in 1982, with Martin Taylor and Diz Disley on guitars. I think he was wearing the same disco shirt as in this video.

Watching this makes me want to play my acoustic violin , but it fell apart years ago it couldnt take the atlanta heat it was made in 1941 in cincinnati i have always wanted to reglue it luckly i waited now i know alot more about that and what glue to use , will have to squezz it in between my mandolin projects

I have always loved Grappelli i have alot of his cds and albums , i was a fan of jean luc ponty from 1977 and thats how i found him i have a few cds they did together not that Grisman wasnt good i love him also but to me Grappelli was better than Grisman i have been lucky to see Grisman play many times and ponty play many times wish i had seen Grisman and Grappelli play together , i have never seen Grappelli play live

Speaking of violin, Darol Anger was, and is, really an incredible musician. And acrobat looking at this video. He's right up there with the great players in anything he does.

This first video led me to a wonderful 'find' another instant hero that I've never known. A jazz fiddler from Hungary named Illenyi Katica. Holy Cats! can she play jazz fiddle. She is in a video with Grapelli on you tube. BTW the guitarist plays a really sweet Gretch.

About 39:44 Grapelli joins in.

That is just so utterly brilliant on so many levels. Grappelli's life was quite extraordinary, as the marvellous dvd and book elucidate, and I think this is one of the great archive/memorial packages around on any musician's life. Something like this would be amazing on Dawg!

I used to hear the Grappelli-Grisman "Live" album on the Jazz by Request radio show on WEVD in New York hosted by Marty Wilson.
Tiny Moore is on one tune and this was the first time I heard him. I first heard Grappelli with Paul Simon and I first heard Dawg with the Grateful Dead. Stephane even did a public television show with the Boston Pops. I would love to see that again!
