I don't. It is "the name which must not be spoken."
But seriously (almost), I never speak his name, because he just doesn't come up in conversation anywhere in my life other than here. And conversations here are not out loud. Reason being, no one I know knows who he is or what he does or has done. Are you surprised? Do you think he's famous or something?
But I ever were to, I would say "Theel." That's how John Paul Jones says it, and he's met him, so that's good enough for me.

Well, geez, I'm glad there's agreement.
Journeybear, you're hanging out with the wrong people if they're not talking about Chris Thile.

Prolly. They're not as involved in the mandolin gestalt as we are. Got other things on their minds. The upside is they don't know any better, so they think I'm the best. I have chosen to humbly accept their praise, and not hurt their feelings by correcting them.
And yes, JPJ pronounces it "Theelee." I was trying to check this (not trusting my memory) but my computer crashed.

It is definitely pronounced "thee-lee"
I wondered myself the other day, so I looked around at interviews etc and it is pronounced "thee-lee"
I had thought it to be "Theel", but I was wrong.
Phonetically it is 'Theal-e', I believe, but I could be wrong.
It used to be pronounced "that obnoxious gyrating upstart", but since the Loars and the Bach, now it's just "thee-lee"....
Since this thread is still somehow active long after the question has been answered, I'll throw this into the mix, along with a snarky reminder that SO many questions can be answered if one just takes the time to do a little research on one's own.
The wiki informs us:: Christopher Scott Thile (/ˈθiːliː/ thee-lee; born February 20, 1981). Although the wiki's accuracy is often suspect, I see no reason to doubt it in this instance.

And if himself isn't a good enough source, when he won the Genius Grant, we got an AP advisory for the broadcast types that included the correct pronunciation (thee-lee) -- and you thought all the broadcast types just naturally knew how to pronounce places like Kurdistan?

Snark noted. However, for what it's worth, (1) Wiki ain't research because (2) you never know who's posting on Wiki and (3) what the source is, therefore, is unknown, and therefore (4) you never know how reliable it is.
At least on the Café, I know who's giving the answers, and who I can rely on. And (I say snarkily) who not. Just sayin'.

Duly noted. Just seems sometimes questions get asked more as conversation starters than mere queries for info - which often can be found pretty easily elsewise.
For a matter as relatively inconsequential and easily verifiable as this, though, the wiki is just fine.
I'm more curious to learn how to correctly pronounce "Bertram Henze."
