I was reading a discription of Varnish finish on an instrument. After french polishing with shellac, they recomended finish coats of lacquer. Is this correct ? It seems to me that this defeats the whole point of what you are trying to do.
    #Am I overlooking something here ?

Pat- where did you read that? I'd be curious. As to your question, I would say absolutely not. No lacquer over varnish. It might be possible if the varnish was catalyzed, but that's not likely what you'd put an an instrument.

You can lacquer over shellac, but there would be no question that the solvents in the lacquer would get through to the varnish and attack it. Utter destruction would be my guess (30 years of woodworking experience).

I believe there are some old Gibsons which had a lacquer overspray with oil base. However, there is no reason I can think of to do it. Especially if you just french polished it! Generally putting a harder curing finish over a softer one is asking for trouble.
