LOL if that thing sells, I'm going to start selling my autograph.

I once knew someone who had a brother who knew some guy that had an uncle who jammed with Jimi Hendrix! My autograph should be worth a few hundred bucks on ebay. (OK my Hendrix story if fake, but if it's on ebay, it must be real)

    Oh, dear. What a shame.

Only $300 too. Looks like I missed out on the Monroe-related bargain of the century there.

Thank goodness the seller thought to put up three photos. Might not have gotten a real good idea what it looks like from just one.

Oh, and its condition is "used." Now THAT is truth in advertising!

BTW, it's not a former Bluegrass Boy's hair, but his son's. If it were Edd Mayfield's hair, that'd be a whole 'nother somethin'. Still wouldn't be no part of nothin', though ...

Sadly, I don't think even serious hair collectors would be very interested. Got HAS?

In case you couldn't figure it out on your own, the seller and, ah, provider are in cahoots. Here's his album artwork - after the haircut - and the liner notes. Also a rendering by the seller of the fellow, before haircut.

Man! Times must be hard for some folks. Just amazing what some folks will put out there in hopes of making a buck or two.

I was getting used to Monroebilia being treated like relics of the saints, but this is 'way past that.

The relic of someone whose father used to work with one of the saints…the chain of provenance has a missing link or two...

Well, he's starting off with the hair off his head; if this sells we'll see what comes next.

And a minor player at that. Says the wiki:

In the summer of 1951, Bill Monroe's guitarist, Carter Stanley, left the band, and Monroe, who had heard of Mayfield, offered him the vacant slot as guitarist in the Bluegrass Boys. At the time he joined the Bluegrass Boys, Edd Mayfield was described as "a handsome, tough-as-barbed-wire cowpuncher, who literally grew up on a ranch, who could ride hard, lasso accurately, and literally toss and tie up a bull. . . and had the wiry strength of a gymnast.”

On October 28, 1951, Mayfield made the first of his nineteen recordings with "Bill Monroe and His Bluegrass Boys", but he left the group within a year and was replaced by Jimmy Martin. In 1954, when Martin had left the band, Mayfield rejoined the Bluegrass Boys. A few months later he again quit.

In early 1958, Mayfield returned to Monroe for the last time. He contracted leukemia, became ill while on the road with the band, and, within three days of being stricken, died at a hospital in Bluefield, West Virginia. He was thirty two.

He sounds like a character. BTW, I assume that "nineteen recordings" means that many songs, not albums. There's a good bit more about him and The Mayfield Brothers in this article, co-written by Allan Munde. And the lineup was Edd Mayfield, guitar; Herb Mayfield, mandolinl; Smokey Mayfield, fiddle. So, at long last, actual mandolin content! Connect enough dots ...

In all fairness to Monroe fans and connecting to one of his greatest lead guitarist/singers, this may be as close as we can get to old Edd. Not saying I need to or want to get that close to Edd. I'll just listen to the Monroe/Edd recordings and try not to think if he had hair or not. Now if this was Big Mon's hair!!!
