Got mine today...really nice quality books! Can't wait to play some of the tunes.

David's wearing a MCafe hat on the back of "Dawg Roots".

I would happily pay for CDs of the Dawg playing these solo as written. Maybe as a future companion piece?

    Wow very cool.

I think the idea is that many of us already have these recordings from which the transcriptions were taken. Therefore selling it with the CD's would unnecessarily increase the cost.

Good excuse to go back and listen to some Dawg.

I don't know if that was the idea or not but I've found its better for me to hear and see rather than to just see the transcriptions. The phrasings and nuances are easier to learn if one can hear the tunes. I don't know if the past CDs are accurate when following the new books?! Seems like it would sell better with the CDs following the tab...

These looks nice. Scanning the TOC, some are from elsewhere - his 10 Tunes in 9 Keys, Recorded Bluegrass Solos, the Homespun instructional book. Are these the same transcriptions? And on Blackberry Blossom and Eighth of January (misspelled on the website), are these generic readings of the tune or are they his solos off the Tony Rice Rounder record from 1976?

Is there a discography or does each tune have the recording (ACD #) where it can be found listed with it???

Hmm good point...but I assume at least they now reprinted the TABS. I'm guessing but Dawg's "descriptive text by the author" might shed some light as to what versions the transcriptions come from. I just bought the roots book.

For the Dawg roots book , each song as MULTIPLE listings (2-6) where you can find audio versions of the songs, from the Acoustic Disc catalog and other sources. For the Dawg grass book the references are mostly ACD and Acoustic Oasis downloads.

Really quite a nice couple of books. Each song is reduced to about a page of tablature plus standard notation and there is no notation of solos, just the main mandolin parts of the songs. The separate section in the back that just has the standard notation. For the Dawg grass book there are pages for each of the mandolin parts on the twin and triple mandolin songs.

Yeah, some of the material is the same as from some other Grisman transcription books- but this is the condensed version (with a little history and some pictures). Much more approachable than a long note for note transcription of the solo with the tab and standard notation all on the same page with so many measures so each song has multiple page turns (like some of the Shady Grove transcription book).

I'm waiting on "THE BOOK OF THE DAWG - Volume 3 - David Grisman Quintet/Dawg Jazz".
I'm not sure if it is the works or not, but I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Edit - Just heard from Craig Miller from acousticoasis.com.
    He says:
"Yes The Vol 3 Dawg Jazz is in the works
    sometime next year"

    Sweet!

Thanks for the quick e-mail response Craig!
