I’m enjoying the pics! But I also want to hear the sound… sample, please?
Why a three-course? For Greek trichordo music?

Well, I like the simplicity that a D-a-d tuning brings to the table, but it's also great for wailing on. With no further fanfare:

    and

I'm doing up a new site for Stan, and hopefully bartering for another instrument. Kinda torn between a 4 course 'zouk, a blarge or a cittern at this point, assuming he takes the bait!

Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!

That's pretty cool. Was your cat the inspiration for the colors? I love the black walnut by the way.

Nah, just happened that she matches the instrument or vice versa I love the walnut too, it's simply gorgeous.

Thanks Garry! I'm probably going to have Stan do a cittern for me next, see if he can match the woods on it. The Western red cedar was pretty opened up right away, very mature sound. His prices are crazy good too!

it looks like a lovely instrument but it is always nice to link to your luthier's web site. Bigleaf Mandolins

Unless, of course, you are waiting to link to the new site.

It sounds great. What is the scale and what gauge strings do you use?

That's got a 20.75" scale length and is using 0.032-0.012 / 0.022-0.022 / 0.012-0.012. Thanks for the complements; I'm not there yet, but this instrument certainly makes learning easy

Yeah, pretty sure that includes shipping, you might want to confirm that with Stan. He's been a pleasure to work with, and I absolutely recommend him. I know that previous owners liked his instruments, but with time and experience, it seems he's refined his techniques. I have no doubts he's going to be another much talked about luthier here at the forums.

How long is the build time? I have to factor in 12% import tax plus 22% vat on to that. Hmmmm

For my 3 course, it was about 6 weeks total. Like I said, talk to him, he may swing you a deal of some type or another.

Thanks a million for this thread Rob. I'm thrilled to find a local luthier with such down-to-earth prices - Stan could be my next go-to guy.

Just tell him I sent you - he didn't send me tons of pics while building my 'zouk, just when it was almost done, and while he does respond to emails, he's pretty terse. He does, however, not leave you hanging if you need something or have a questions about anything. I'm planning on having him do a matching mandolin next year for me...CBOMAS has hit!

I dream of a day when Stan's name is mentioned right along side of Nyberg, Sobell, Peterson and all the other quite famous luthiers found here at the cafe.

Absolutely, I'll mention you sent me. I'm pretty keen on that blarge - would love to get a Foley, but um, reality will have to suffice I think.

And I'll be honest, for the money, you're gonna get a high quality hand crafted instrument, and he offers a lifetime guarantee. NFI, just a satisfied customer!

Good to see another BC builder getting mentioned. I looked at Stan's website quite a while ago when I was thinking about getting an OM and was impressed. I ended up going with Lawrence Nyberg as I had played his instruments in the past and loved them, and he was local and I was able to go to his shop and see it being built. Turned out better than I could have hoped!

Enjoy your new instrument and play it in good health.
