I am not an advanced mandolin player, maybe just at an intermediate stage, playing mainly classical. As a violin player, the name Paganini used to scare me off.
Now this said here is the fun part:
Moto Perpetuo is a perfect exercise for shifting positions on the mandolin . At a moderato speed it is a very good technique exercise. Get the version from imslp with the fingers to use.
And caprice 24 is rather fun to play, always if you don't try to speed it up.
And just for advise don't watch Yehudi Menuhin performing the Moto Perpetuo as the speed will scare you

You bring up a good point. Lots of composed music can be used as exercises, and has the advantage of gratifying the ear when done correctly and thereby rewarding your efforts. Learning pentatonic scales, while a good exercise, really by itself doesn't make you go ahhhh.

As long as whatever you learn and master brings a smile of accomplishment to you, that's all important.

There are two interesting interpretations on Bela Fleck's "Perpetual Motion" CD...appropriately titled, huh?

I have the 24 Caprices played by Itzak Perman. The thought of even attempting to play any part of any one of them would fill me with dread !. I'll leave those to the 'big boys',
