To satisfy my own curiosity, when this thread was started in 2014 there were about 600 total ads. That number has changed.

Is it just me or is this thread kind of dangerous (to the bank account). Sure, I browse the classified most days anyway, but just when I let up, this thread comes back to alert me of that one deal I just can't pass up.
How many times has that happened to you?

JBovier are mandolins designed by Jeff Cowherd in Kentucky and then small batch hand built in China to his specs. Then they are shipped to him and he does the setup and finish work.

They are well reviewed on mandolin cafe and regarded as a great budget mandolin. I have owned a few and really like them.

Just PM'd a seller about my (hopefully) first mando...The Classifieds gave me a few really compelling options, but there's one that stood out for where I'm at financially/as a complete greenhorn. Fingers crossed!

a '23 Loar for 75k at Carter's, and it sounds like that! I don't give a crap about the patches in the back. Of course I don't have 75k either. But if I owned it, I would be able to play just like Sierra Hull!
I can't stay away from the classifieds. I look at more times a day than I care to admit. I tell myself that there is one instrument I am watching for (and their is), but it really is more about the entertainment of seeing what's put up for sale.
I am actually quite good at resisting MAS, though, so it's not too dangerous for my bank account. Problem is, I live by a one-in, one-out rule and don't want to part with any of my current instruments. Still, there is that one I am watching for. . .

Will someone please grab this one before I do something rash? http://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/108717#108717
Not only affordable but right down the road from me . . . thankfully today the blizzard precludes my venturing out.

I have gone through alternating phases where I don't care and where I can't stay away. The hook for me is that they are almost continuously updated. I always feel like I am missing something. It would much easier for those of us with no discipline if the classifieds "came out" once a month or something.
And its funny, I am not shopping. Not really. I am just looking at mandolins. I would almost prefer the classifieds be in the same format as the eye candy section, so I could just browse the images. (I love the eye candy section.) I have only bought from the classifieds twice. It went exceedingly well both times.
But my obsessiveness paid off once, where I spotted the instrument of my dreams, and was on the phone right away. Turns out the fellow had just finished posting the ad when I called. Boom, boom, and boom, all the mandolin I could ever want, the last mandolin I would ever buy, was on its way to me.
That was three mandolins ago.

if I had the coin, I'd nab this one

darylcrisp, I have a Pava, it is wonderful - you wouldn't be sorry......
Is it a bad sign when there's more than one of your former mandolins in the Cafe classifieds simultaneously? I once owned #19 (before Jim, before Andrew, before Clement) and only sold it as I was downsizing to buy a house. If you read through the archives -- and I have -- these early Pavas were seemingly made with the same division of labor as an Ellis A5, only with red maple (which I love) and lacquer (on which I'm somewhat agnostic). If you like a fuller neck profile, which is simply a matter of preference, this could be all the mandolin you'd ever need (JeffD trademark) at half the price of top shelf builders.
