I did a search of the entire board and found no mention of this group. Guitarist John Miller who is based in Seattle sent me this CD yesterday. He plays with this group and the recording is from 2004. The mandolin player is Petri Hakala and this stuff is mind blowing. Beautiful music, great compositions and remarkable playing. Anyone heard of them? Highly recommended. See freshet.net. Jazzy, European, etc. Hakala is a real monster player. Big chops, great ideas...

I'm looking forward to hearing this one, Scott. Any recording with any one of those four wonderful musicians is worth hearing. I've been playing music with Ruthie on and off for three decades, and I think she's one of the best fiddlers we have. John Miller is also a treasure on the guitar--solo or in a group. Petri Hakala is one of the true masters of the mandolin. I've enjoyed hearing him in many contexts over the years, and this looks like a great new combo for him. And Tapani Varris is a monster bass player and virtuoso jawharpist. His solo harp album is amazing.

    Thanks for the tip.

Wow! This is some amazing stuff. Petri Hakala is pretty amazing and sounds a bit like Mike Marshall with his real deep, percussive, tone. What a great group. I got to see John Miller once down here in NWCali perform with John Reischman in very small room with only like 30 people. That was the first show that I heard a Loar, I think..which I didn't know at the time.

    Is this your program, Spruce?

For me, that link brings up a page that looks like this:

I love this CD and all these players. I get to play with Ruthie from time to time and she always knocks it out of the park. We've been playing the Homenaje a me Pueblo, the 1st track from this CD in our shows of late - got sheet music if anyone wants to try it...
