    Re: Mandolin neck

I personally don’t like a narrow neck. I make mine just under 1 3/8 inch. I have 4 fingers so I don’t need to cover more than one chorus with one finger. In fact I find it easier to make sure I don’t...

    Re: Slotted Peghead?

I have never found slotted headstocks harder to change strings. But I do feel that they are harder to make. I use a slotted headstock if I am trying to replicate a historic design as in my tenor harp...

    Re: Slotted Peghead?

I used the Rubner tuners on my octave mandolin because I was going for a Selmer Gypsy jazz look.

Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

Pre drill the neck the same diameter as the screw. That will work better anyway.

Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

It’s best to go from the outside of the neck , through the neck into the neck block. The direction of the arrow in the thumbnail sketch by Mike.

Re: Separation of Neck From Body… What a Bummer

From the pictures you have shown us it doesn’t look like a dove tail. It looks more like a mortise and tenon joint. Probably let go due to wood shrinkage. If you want to try it yourself I would first...

    Re: Preslotted fingerboards

I used to get slotted fingerboards from Luthiers Mercantile. They went out of business. Had a friend build a digital read out slotting jug. He just finished it and I haven’t tried it yet.

Re: Oval hole build - thickness and shape

My 2 cents worth. I don’t do carved top. Only flat tops. I do oval hole for two reasons. I like the way it looks. Y think it gives more top surface between the bridge and the sound hole.

By saying you don’t have to move out of 1st position are they implying it might be tuned in 4ths not 5ths?

Re: OM - rather loud in the lighter strings

Another factor to consider is bracing. Stiff (or over braced) top will emphasis higher frequencies. An arch (carved) top with react much different than a flat top. Trouble is that there are very few...

Re: OM - rather loud in the lighter strings

When you think about it an octave mandolin is almost the same frequency range as a guitar. So why not the same body size and scale length?

I just skimmed the post so forgive me if I repeat something that has already been said. The tailpiece may not have been plated. Brass instruments are sometimes finished with a gold colored lacquer....

Of course violins are a little different in that there is no binding and the top and back overhang the sides. But, this is a common problem with violins. The top or back shrinks I little and the...

I’m sure this subject has been discussed many times before. But, there might be some new ideas out there. I have just recently started adding carbon rods to my necks. I have read that you should use...
  20. Re: Western mandocello strings on a European mandocello? (or nylo

I recently did a guitar to mandocello conversion. The donor guitar was a Guild Jumbo Junior. Slightly shorter scale than a full sized guitar. Here is my thought process. When you do drop D tuning on...
  21. Re: Western mandocello strings on a European mandocello? (or nylo

First, you might get more responses in the CBOM section of the forum.
Second, what is the scale length?
Third, I think the D’Addario mandocello strings are too heavily for any flat top mandocello....

Re: Fret buzz on new Bowlback Mandola

If you have an old credit card lying around cut a rectangle that will fit under the bass foot of the bridge. If the buss goes away I would say your bridge is a bit to short.
