Re: What is the story behind the "scroll"

Were Gibson's harp guitars the first necked musical instruments to have the same kind of scrolls as a F-style mandolin? They seem to have come out very close to the same time. I think the first harp...

Re: What is the story behind the "scroll"

I am going to mention the harp guitar again... I think the scroll helped make the extended upper bout on the bass side look less like an ungainly bulbous protrusion and more like part of the design....

Re: What is the story behind the "scroll"

I kind of wonder if the scroll started with the harp guitar and carried over to the mandolin.

Re: What is the story behind the "scroll"

I think Orville Gibson really went in for the elaborate designs. I don't know if he invented the scroll, though.

Re: A structured approach to modern songs

I think at the most fundamental level, we improve the best when we identify a weakness and then work through activities that address that weakness.

Here is a $100 Rogue with the same "inlay": https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Rogue/RM100F-Mandolin-118360476.gc
  12. Re: Trying to find out who made this F-Style mandolin

It does not look good to me at all. Is that inlay or decal on the headstock? Maybe for super cheap if you want to go on a canoe trip and want something where you don't care if it falls in the water.

    Re: Washburn Jethro Burns M4S

There is quite a bit of discussion on this model if you search the forums. One poster said they were "junk"; another poster disagreed strongly.
Congrats on finding a good one!

    Re: "Opening-up", Myth or Fact?

Luthier Al Carruth has done some analysis of guitars and had seen measurable changes in their response over time.

Re: Need a Setup in Louisville

I was a big fan of FQMS circa 2001... I thought the staff was always friendly but they would leave you alone and let you play the instruments they had in stock: a vast array of great guitars, all set...

Re: At last night's Cardinals game

Went to the Cardinals game last night with my son and parked close to the Old Rock House. After the game, when we went back to the car, we could see (through the bar's windows) and hear Bush...
  17. Re: Learning from tabs versus standard notation - thoughts?

It's more like having an understanding of grammar without being able to read. Being able to get I/me and him/he correct without reading. Knowing the difference between an adverb and an adjective...
  18. Re: Learning from tabs versus standard notation - thoughts?

I don't really play much standard notation on guitar, although I can follow it a bit -- at least the melody line. For learning guitar solos, I prefer tab.

I have learned a lot of mandolin tunes...

    Re: practicing in private

"Happy Birthday" is kind of a tough tune to play by ear, IME. I can play OK by ear, but I find it a lot harder than most other simple melodies. I think it has some big jumps and it doesn't start on...

Re: Why do we get such odd responses to ads?

"What's your best price?" is, in my opinion, a negotiation tactic used to get the seller to put himself into a less favorable position. It's a trap! I think the best response for a seller is, "I...

Re: Need a Little Help on A Style Mando's

Since you already have an Eastman, I would avoid just getting the same thing (f-hole import mandolin) in an A style. Get something different! Get an oval-hole (either an arch-top import or vintage...

    Re: Travel mandolin

original poster pointed out that you can put special strings on it to tune in 5ths so that the fretboard works out to be like a mandolin.

The concept of "travel mandolin" is a little funny to me...

    Re: Strings--specifically, shrill "E"s

IME, lighter strings always have a tinnier, shriller sound. If you want a fatter tone, you should use at least mediums.
