Re: So many great builders, how did you choose?

I got my first Gilchrist before anyone really knew who he was in 1987. Kind of a risk if you think about it but I was buying a long term instrument that I still have. It just sounded and felt...

    Re: SM 93 mini mic

I use a shure clip on for my mandolin at church. I think it's a SM 90 ment for a sax. I just clip it on the pickguard and it really works well. Needs power.

    Re: Your Mandolin Pilgrimage

Never owned my own mandolin until I bought a Gilchrist in 1987. Knew what I wanted and waited a few years to find it. Since then I've aquired 2 La Plants and another Gilchrist. So far I've kept...

Re: Your favorite key to play in

Personally, I like to play in the key that the other guys are playing. Before I did that, I wasn't so popular at the jams. As a banjo player I had enough to deal with already to let the small issue...

A friend of mine who is a jazz player, and a VERY good one at that, played bass in our BG band for a while. We played some traditional stuff and mostly original stuff. When Bob asked me about the...

    Re: Randy Snoddy

Last I heard, Randy had moved to AZ or at least had a place here in Spring Valley. I purchased a Gilchrist from him around '87 and a Givens in '88 for my brother. In both cases he sent me the...

Re: gun safe as security for your mandos.

Just built a house and installed a safe room. It's 5'X5' with 8" solid poured block walls and a 6" cement ceiling. Fire and water proof. Very stable temp. The door weighs about 950 lbs so it's a...
  11. Re: Mandolin for 2-1/2 to 3 year old? Too soon?

My 2 1/2 year old grandson also wants to strum on my mandolins. He will often strum on all 4 in one sitting. We only play together and he's learned to be very careful. Good thing since I have 2...

Re: Your first experience with a Loar?

I was able to play couple of Loars before I ever purchased my first mandolin. Played a 5-string banjo and banjo/mando before that. My first purchase was a choice between a Gilchrist, Gibson F-5, or...

    Re: Beauty or Tone?

In an earlier post I said I buy instruments that speak to me. What I mean is that I sound the best I can playing these instruments. Price isn't as much the consideration as the tone. I own 2...

Definately tone first, playability (I mean good set up), and looks last. I'm blessed because Mr Gilchrist and Mr LaPlant made sure they look great too! I try to take very good care of my...

    Re: Lloyd LaPlant mandolins?

    Big Joe,
Last time I was at Lloyd's he was playing a 12 fret he built. Said it was his personal guitar for 20 years or more. Probably the best I've heard or played.

I paid $2250 for my Gil in 1987. Liked it then and still like it now. The purchase wasn't an investment as much as a desire to get the best mandolin I could afford. A loar was out of my budget and 2K...
