  1. Re: Just signed up for the new John Reischman class at Peghead Na

I went to a workshop with Reischman (really enjoyed his calm, quiet somewhat wry manner) and he really stresses volume along with tone - make both strings sound, loud and clean.

He's been on my music list since the soundtrack for "Heaven's Gate" - i have the mandolin tabs for "Heaven's Gate Waltz" and wish I had more of the music in tabs.

Listening to this, it sounds like...

Bought on Amazon, listening as I type! Great stuff! "Earl Grey In The Morn" and "Coffee and A Good Book" are my favorites!

    Re: Cross picking suggestions?

Hey, Andy Statman's book, "Bluegrass Masters: Jesse McReynolds Mandolin (Paperback)" is available used on Amazon - for between $126-$351. Gotta love Amazon's competitive pricing bot for used books....
  5. Re: What do you consider to to be the best recorded mandolin tone

I have heard OF this recording, but the only thing I have ever seen is a mediocre-quality youtube video.
  6. Re: Who Likes Non-Traditional COLORS on their Mandos?

While I love the traditional reds (not so much the traditional yellow tobacco colors), I also love blues.

If I hadn't just bought a "desert dawn" 2005 Weber Yellowstone F oval hole off the...

Re: Instrument care: In Floor Radiant Heat

It also depends on the type of radiant heat - if you are talking about pex buried in concrete or a Warmboard or staple-up floor. If it's concrete, then generally the system has a set point, say 65 or...
  9. Re: Here Comes the Sun solo mando Tim Connell

Walker Creek also, some great stuff from him.

Was this video shot out in the Alvord? Sure looks like it.

    Re: So few women

Lol, my PNW breast cancer support group included two men, one who had breast cancer and one who had lost his wife and wanted to give any support he could to women going through the same thing.

    Re: So few women

I also think it has to do with how welcoming a group is or is not to new players. One of the groups here used to have a sort of intro slower jam, with a more limited "set list", prior to the main...
  12. Re: Norman Blake's Instruments up for sale at Carter Vintage

Strike that - the $19,500 is an octave up on their site.

    Re: Collins? Weber? Other recommendation?

Just picked up a 2005 Weber Yellowstone, f-style oval hole here on the Classifieds and I love it. Needs some minor set up (high action, needs a slight truss rod tweak and the bridge needs to be...

    Re: amazon price fluctuations?

Sometimes - but not always - you can get better prices by going to the website of the selling company (when it isn't sold by Amazon or sold by another company but fulfilled by Amazon). You can also...

    Re: John Sullivan F

Saw Caleb Klauder and Reeb Williams night before last - he has a Sullivan F. Couldn't figure out what it was while he was playing - no builder logo and it's got the Gibson flowerpot on a Gibson-style...
  16. Re: Recommendations for quality gig bag? (I'm picky...)

Take a look at the Gator case as well. Pretty similar to a Travelite. I might have to give the Travelite's gray plush interior a slight nod over the Gator's black plush interior, but that is a pretty...

Re: Alternate verses to Shady Grove

That MUST be a mistake, clearly it should be:

"Wish I had a mandolin string, made of golden twine"

kind of awkward with the syllables, but it can be made to work....

Re: Tweed Cases. Really don't need one, but...

In the early 70s, the spouse bought a late-60s Tele that came in a much older, battered Fender tweed case -the case was probably late 50s, early 60s (Koylon interior). It wasn't in good shape when he...

Re: Thile's First Prairie Home Companion

My local station out of Ashland, OR decided not to air it AT ALL. Had I been home, I'd have caught the live show, but I hate being stuck in one place at one time.

  20. Re: Article: John Reischman - Music From Up In The Woods

Picked this up at camp and it was very fun to watch John Reischman and the other instructors play "Nesser" and then go back to my camp and slowly pick it myself! Look forward to getting some good new...
  21. Re: Tim Connell's workshop at Walker Creek Music Camp

I went to his (too short, he only had an hour) choro workshop and I thought one of the greatest things was the explanation of how the chord charts are drawn, one "box" per measure. At a glance you...

  23. Re: Hard case for older Gibsons (and other shorter-neck mandolins

Picked up a silver fiberglass Eastman F shaped case (from The Mandolin Store) - my 1928 Gibson F4, my Eastman 604 and my late 70s Washburn 2 point all fit fairly well. The points on the F4 don't fall...

    Re: prices then and now

My handy dandy US Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator (which uses CPI, a measure many says underestimates inflation) says that $7,500 in 1995 is $11,750 in 2015, so keep that in mind. And...
