Thanks, it sounded much better after the modifications.
Click here and go to my website. More pictures and explanations. I figured that I spent about $65.00 total. I did have the electronics in...
I started my mandolin journey with similar first steps.
Here's my story.
I had never played a mandolin, but wanted to try one out to see if it would suit me. I bought a Rogue 100A for $45.00...
I installed a single P-bass pickup on a Rogue 100A mandolin. I bought it to experiment with. The whole install was quick and easy. It sounds great.

I liked it a lot. Very well done, as are your other tunes. :mandosmiley:
I agree with what others have stated. Part of building your own instrument is the desire to have something unique. Swapping out parts, and materials, is a good way to accomplish this. I think any...
Martin,
those are going to look stunning! I love the forward thinking construction and design. Post more pictures when you can.
Thanks Rick,
I don't want to hijack this thread, but will answer your questions.
The name Darlin' Ann was my homage to my wife Darleen Ann Beal. She is the young woman in the construction...
I've used my carbide rabbet router bit set to cut the binding rabbets for two arched top mandolins. They were simple A styles and had flat backs. The secret to doing it this way is to use a horse...
My Aleutka was a great sailboat. Ocean going sailboats are huge projects, even at only 26 feet. I don't have anymore 5 year projects left in me. One of the reasons I like building stringed...
You can never have too many clamps. I've heard that many times and believe it to be true. Some of these are left over from my boat building days, but most have been acquired to build stringed...
Thanks Peter,
I was mistaken in saying that U-Beaut Hard Shellac is no longer available from LMII. It is still on their website.
I never tried french polishing with it, but did spray and brush...
To answer your question "Are nitrocellulose Lacquers basically the same?" the answer is ..... yes. Will the brands not specifically formulated for acoustic instruments work equally well? Maybe not....
Thanks,
I sprayed painted it using vinyl sealer, then color coats of Tone Rite tints mixed into Behlen Nitrocellulose Stringed Instrument Lacquer. The final clear coats are Behlen Nitrocellulose...
Here's a photo of the headstock of my IV A-style mandolin I built. I inlayed a holly logo into the thin rosewood veneer. I had to use very tiny chisels for this operation.

I checked out your site and think your mandos are beautiful. Glad to see that you are not doing the same old tired designs and methods.
I have been using "Stone" paint on my instruments for a few...
You can experiment using a small piece of foam rubber to change the size of your F holes. This is a good way to fine tune sound chamber if your instrument seems to favor the treble end too much.

Yes, most of the Male Mold becomes part of the final instrument. Examine these photos. It's better than me trying to explain it.

That's high praise as I'm a big fan of Phil and his designs. In fact, I built his Thomaston Galley design twice. Best boat I ever rowed.
The internal framework only adds a few oz at most. It's a...

There is nothing inherently wrong with using engineered wood to build stringed instruments. Many successful ones, as stated by previous posters, have been built and played in the last hundred years....
Here is a photo of what I did to remove the fretboard. The heat pads are most often used to aid in bending the sides of acoustic instruments. A rheostat regulates the heat output.

I wanted to reuse a fretboard I had TiteBond glued to a mahogany neck. I removed it by clamping a silicon heat pad to the FB and heating it to about 320 degrees. The lacquer finish blistered and...
