They can have my Orpheum when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
It’s not.
Pete Braccio, I also use EFW-74s on both a Mike Black A4 and a Gibson F5G, but the Orpheum tenor banjo gets Tomastic 174 light strings. They call them Mandola strings but folks on the far side of the...
Yes. 2005 F5G flat board. Radiused with first re-fret.
My Orpheum #1 wasn’t much more than the stated amount. Did need some work, though.
You could spend 6K and not do better than a Festival F. It’s all in the ear of the beholder. My theory is to never give up a mandolin until you’ve worn out a set of frets. The hunt is fun.
No love here for Collings ovals. I own Mike Black #27 and have played several of his mandolins and octaves. Beautiful builds without the sterile look of..............not going to bash them again....
Again, that Mike Marshall video shows you about everything basic that you need. Support the instrument in place without support of the L hand. L thumb rides the edge of the neck at about first joint....
Polkas; John Ryan’s, Cheese, Little Diamond, etc and maybe Big Sciota.
The hand looks to be in an uncomfortable position. Mike Marshall has a video where he shows great ergonomics of the L wrist and hand. And don’t cut it off, I was just kidding.
I struggled with bluegrass for years, probably decades, actually. Then I fell in with some fine folks who played ITM and contradance tunes. I discovered old-time subsequently and fell in love with...

There simply is not enough room to make that note without cramping. I suggest you nip a bit off. Tends to free up some space on the fretboard.
That’s just it. They do produce stellar mandolins, according to owners who post here. I believe them. The f-hole instruments on the table were probably killer. That one oval hole A was disappointing...
I hesitate to speak negatively about any luthier. They’re very special, very talented people and Pava obviously builds exceptional instruments. That said, Pava and Ellis brought mandolins to the big...
There was one that went around like the pick sampler, been a few years ago. Helped my Gibson get over the hump. I sent it along.
People love to gripe about the cost of Blue Chip picks and the other premium cost picks. I cannot take a date out to dinner for what a BC CT 55 costs. I get the tone and volume I want from BC and Red...
“Frozen version of a moving target”, That is golden. I’ll have to remember that for my reader friends. I play with several different clans of ITM/Old Time musicians here in the mid-West, and one in...
The width, depth and contour of the neck are easily as critical to clean playing as a radius. Be that as it may, I had a Gibson radiused when refret was necessary, and my Mike Black A4 has a perfect...
Love the tee shirt. Throwing the disc and playing the mandolin is my retirement plan.
This is at the heart of our nation; Embrace diversity. To do it with your mandolin, golden.
That is the best reason I’ve ever seen or heard of for not putting a capo on any mandolin.
Klezmer is fun. Contradance, old-time, rock, rock & roll, a little bluegrass, old jazz, some new jazz, maybe some big band, swing is more try than do, TV themes mostly 60s, pick a random radio...
I often hear it as a degree of accomplishment, used to differentiate between a “picker” and some person with a mandolin.
Old Settlers has a strong old-time following. Turkey Track has lots of jamming but can be clicky. Best to know someone for an in. Winfield is heaven. Show up on land rush day and find someone...
I’ve had to eliminate some expensive hobbies in order to afford fuel to get to places to pick. Fishing boats, skeet shooting, vintage travel trailers. Pipes and tobacco I tried to play smart. I had a...
