Yeah, I saw it on Bluegrass Today also. Bummer for me. Hard to believe. Especially changing careers all together (BTW, I did the same thing). What a certified monster talent he is. My favorite...
And all of The Bluegrass Album Band recordings.
Anything by The Bluegrass Album Band.
Sorry. Didn't mean to confuse. Didn't read all the posts before responding.
The bluegrass band I'm in (Fine Line Bluegrass) does the song. Our female mandolin player does a great job of singing it.
It's my understanding they're not Chinese made, but Chinese assembled. Reviews and comments on The Cafe are highly positive regarding Northfield mandolins.
Exactly what Willie said. It kind of irritates me when music that has no connection to bluegrass (BG) is referred to as such. As a BG musician I'm grateful we have a full-time "BG" station such as...
Saw a video of Kenny Smith changing guitar strings the same way. I'll have to try it.
Wow! Ran the videos through a good sound system. The Hinde (MF 32) sounds fabulous. I want one.
I saw the video of Jimmy going off on Ricky Skaggs, calling him "a a**hole" to his face. Ricky loved Jimmy and his music. Ricky just stood there and took it, very politely. As I watched it I really...
"[...1. getting my "speed" (flatpicking) down cleanly to where I could execute comfortably around 170 bpm or so...]"
Wow!! A hundred seventy BPM? I'm a pretty decent guitar flat picker and I...
I like A minor...as long as everyone else in the band is playing it in A minor.
Keep us informed how things are going. I might be the next in line. I'll be seeing Steve at some festivals this summer and fall. I already have a finish in mind. Now I need a sound in my head...
Anytime you make custom instruments or even purchase one from a store there's going to be someone that thinks it's a little bright, not bright enough, too bass-ey, not enough bass, too much midrange,...
I'm not aware of a book on such. But a lot of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver CDs have what you're looking for. Also the CD with Doyle, J.D. Crowe, and Paul Williams.
Wow, I didn't know about the wait. I was thinking maybe 4-6 months. Evidently they're really starting to be in demand. Hmm, I'd better be thinking about getting my order in.
I meant to mention the...
You mean there are genres for mandolin other than bluegrass?
Drew, yeah I've been hearing lots of positive reports on Hinde instruments. The three mandolins I played sounded absolutely superb. I've also played two of his guitars and they were wonderful. I've...
...I've read nothing but great things about them. He's made them (and guitars) for quite a few big names including Rick Faris and Nick Dumas of Special Consensus, Junior Sisk, and Wayne Benson, just...
I really didn't realize that BG was actually a minority genre of mandolin players. I remember being surprised by that. Still am. I knew there were many other mandolin styles. I just wasn't aware the...
Adam who?? ;)
The Boxcars and Blue Highway...two of my all time favorite BG groups.
What cuyuga red said. I'll tell you a little secret if you promise not to tell anyone. Promise? OK. I traded a Red Diamond (RD) 1922 David Grisman "Crusher" model to get the F5G. Shhhh!
OK, OK,...
FWIW, I played several mandolins. Collings, Daley, Weber, Elk Horn, Northfield, and Gibson. I was planning on getting a high end Collings. After playing them all I chose a Harvey F5G and I love it. I...
