Re: I've got $1200 - what do you recommend?

I agree. There was a time when you could say imported instruments were routinely of a lesser quality than American. That time has passed.

Re: Two best mandolins 4 $1000

I think that I may have bought that mandolin- I got it at Gruhn's yesterday and they said it was a SPBGMA sample. I am absolutely amazed how good this thing sounds- dry, woody, popping and loud! The...

    Re: Coming Into Los Angeles--Guthrie

Yes, the song would be in "C", with Am being the relative minor. Really no such thing as a minor key...
  4. Re: What kind of tone do you look for in a mandolin

Dry, woody and with a "pop". Like my Flatiron. :)
  5. Re: Most disapointing album and best (mando content)

+1 for "The Crossing". A masterpiece.
  6. Re: Most disapointing album and best (mando content)

The 2nd Nickel Creek album was a big disappoint for me because I liked the first one so much. In fact, it's the only one of their records I like.

Hot Rize first album and Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky...

    Re: Nashville Mandolin Orchestra?

What, in your opinion, would qualify as "capable"?
  8. Re: Whatis the most disapointing peformance you ever attended?

I totally do not get Lucinda Williams. One word- overrated.
  9. Re: Whatis the most disapointing peformance you ever attended?

REM- at the 40 Watt club in Athens GA around 1986. I think it was some kind of benefit at the club where they got their start a few years earlier. I was not a huge fan- I liked some of their stuff...

    Re: Gospel survey

I love bluegrass gospel, which my wife says is sacrilegious since I'm agnostic, but I don't see it that way. It makes me feel nostalgic for my childhood, when my grandad would watch "The Gospel...

Re: What is a good D.I. for the Mandolin?

I've seen him four times- definitely worth the price of admission.

    Re: Classifieds

I don't respond to ads that don't list a price. Many forum's classifieds- like the Internet BMW motorcyle riders list require a price for all ads.

    Re: Chord Epiphany

I just meant I don't play a lot of three-note chords on guitar like I do on mandolin.

When I first started playing mandolin, I thought I had to have a scroll because I thought they looked so cool. However, in my search for tone and playability and my limited budget I came across a '93...

    Re: Chord Epiphany

OK, this confuses me. Admittedly I'm not a theory expert, but one of the things I thought I knew was that in order to make a minor chord from a major, you flat the 3. If 2-4-5 (A-F#-D) is a D chord...

I don't know why I bother to post on these topics- someone always takes part of what you say and runs away with it. What I said about feel was specifically describing most of the people "I've known"...
